WEB DuBois Notes In 1896 DuBois became the setoff Black person to encounter a Ph.D. from Harvard University in history. After teaching at Wilberforce University in Ohio and the University of Pennsylvania, he went on to establish the commencement department of sociology in the United States at Atlanta University. After graduating from Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a PhD in histroy, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. He was a founding member of both the Niagara Movement and the NAACP, and editor of the Crisis--the NAACP literary organ. Du Bois rose to national prominence as the purge of the Niagara Movement, a group of African American activists who fatalityed surmountable rights for inexorables. Du Bois and his supporters opposed the Atlanta Compromise, an agreement crafted by booker T. upper-case earn --> Instead, Du Bois insisted on just civil rights and increased political representa tion, which he believed would be brought about by the African-American intellectual elite.
